About the Role
This role involves delivering nurse-led, 2:1 complex care to a child with high-level medical needs following a traumatic high cervical spinal cord injury (C1) and hypoxic brain injury. The individual is ventilator dependent 24/7 via tracheostomy and requires continuous, skilled clinical support in a home setting. All care is delivered as part of a 2:1 team at all times.
Diagnosis summary:
- Traumatic high cervical spinal cord injury (C1) and hypoxic brain injury
- Tracheostomy with full ventilator dependence (24/7)
- Occipito-cervical fixation surgery; history of cardiac arrest
- Secondary osteoporosis related to immobility
Key Responsibilities
As a Paediatric Complex Carer with Coyle Homecare, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care. You will be expected to fulfil the following responsibilities:
- Provide continuous ventilatory support via tracheostomy, including full tracheostomy care and emergency airway management
- Continuously monitor respiratory and cardiovascular status with immediate escalation as required
- Deliver cough assist, nebulisation, positioning, and secretion management
- Administer PEG feeding for nutrition, fluids and medications, supporting limited oral intake as tolerated
- Provide full assistance with mobility, transfers, and repositioning using hoists
- Monitor skin integrity and implement pressure relief interventions
- Deliver skilled urinary catheter care and maintain infection prevention protocols
- Apply strict aseptic technique and monitor for signs of infection
- Administer medications as prescribed and accurately document all care provided
- Provide trauma-informed, child-centred care with a consistent, compassionate approach
Key Job Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Qualified nurse (RN/RGN/RSCN/RCN) or experienced complex care practitioner with relevant clinical competencies
- Demonstrable experience in tracheostomy care and ventilator management
- Competency in PEG feeding, medication administration, and catheter care
- Experience working with paediatric patients or in a complex homecare setting
- Sound knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively to clinical emergencies
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
- Up-to-date mandatory training including moving and handling, safeguarding, and basic life support
